I drove my car from California with plans to make it to Patagonia. Instead I sold my car in Costa Rica and bought a one way ticket to Bogota, Colombia to meet a girl I had dated back in San Diego. My plan was to stay for a few months. We end up getting married and we lived in Colombia for 7 years before we moved to Sao Paulo. I sold my apartment and put all my money into VivaReal. Andrea and I lived in my co-founders' living room in a 1 bedroom apartment for the first month. I am passionate about entrepreneurship and I love being the underdog. I revel in doing things that people think aren't possible. The reason why I started VivaReal was because when I was living in Bogota, I was staying at a really crappy hotel in a bad part of town because I didn't have any money. I started to look for an apartment to move and I scheduled an appointment with a real estate agent. I described what I was looking for and the agent told me that he had the perfect apartment for me. The agent then told me that I would have to pay him to see the list of properties. I was shocked, but also unhappy with my current situation in the hotel so I reluctantly paid him. I spent the entire day visiting the properties and none of them came close to what I was needing. That was the day that I decided there had to be a better way. After reading a Stanford case study about MercadoLibre it hit me. We need to build a real estate marketplace business. One step forward everyday. Wake up and make it count on all the areas of your life. Building a family and an unique company that will have a huge impact on its ecosystem are my current missions. Sports, specially surf and triathlon add energy and bring the right balance to such an intense endeavor.
